I can bet you have lost counts of the number of times you have heard or come across the word blog, blogging or a blogger and how to start a blog and make money. So I assume you have a basic understanding of what a blog is or what blogging is all about.

What is a Blog really?

It is simply an online platform that allows users to reflect, share personal or general opinions, teach different things and discuss various topics in form of posts appearing in a chronological order and sometimes letting readers comment on these posts.

What then is blogging ?

Simply put,  the process of managing and running a blog. That is, basically updating a blog.

So who is a Blogger ?

One who owns, runs and update a blog. Simply, one involved in the process of blogging

The above is a very simplified and elaborate definition of the three basic terms, but I have a feeling the definition doesn’t really cover your intent of being here or the solution you are seeking.

Like every other thing, starting a blog and one that will make money for you requires a great deal of adequate preparation and some basic tools that will help in the smooth running of it.

Basically, you require just three important tools to get started

  • A personal computer ( though you can do the updating with your phone after designing your site)
  • A good internet connection,
  • and ultimately,
  •  A determined and resilient spirit

Starting a blog comes in stages. Here I will walk  you through each of the stages extensively.

Stage 1. Choosing a Niche.

A good niche is a successful blog
Best Niche

A niche is simply  a specific or a particular narrow section of a market.  In this case, it’s the area or topic you want your blog to be focused on. What you prefer to talk about.

This is one of the most important stages of starting your blog. It is the foundation of your blog. And just as any building  with a wrong foundation would collapse easily, so will your blog if you didn’t start it on a solid ground.

Granted, all blogging niches are lucrative and many people are doing well in all. But some niches may not work for you. There is also no denying the fact that some niches are more lucrative than others especially for beginners. This will  depend largely on your target location though

For example in Nigeria. The entertainment and news niches seem to be presently overcrowded. So starting a blog on such niches is not a very wise move for beginners targeting Nigeria audience. (that is not to say it’s not possible making it in such niches, it simply would take a longer time and usually too much of extra work). So you want to chose a niche that’s is not overcrowded in order to achieve your aim of making money quicker.

Here are two major factors to consider when deciding on your niche

  • Your personal interest  and
  • The market availability

Although those who are blogging for fun and pleasure will do just fine with the first factor. The second is very important in fact much more important if your sole purpose of blogging is to make money.

Many people preach that you choose a niche that you have a passion for. While this is a great advice. It has its downside. What if the niche I am passionate for is not lucrative or overly crowded?.

That’s why I advise otherwise, choose a niche with a sizable market, not too crowded, and develop a passion for it.This is not me saying, go into a niche that you have totally no knowledge about.

However, if you get to choose a niche that’s lucrative with moderate competition and that you have passion for, then I should congratulate you because nothing can beat that. It’s just the best.

Don’t let just your passion be your only determining factor

Another instance. Say I have passion for poetry in Nigeria, I wouldn’t go into that niche targeting Nigerians if I ever intend to make good money easily with my blog. The reason for this is that there is such a small market for it. Making money from such niche would take an unusually long period of time.

Blog about topics that many people will be interested in especially ones that have related products that your reader may likely want to buy. In all, make research on niches and ensure to balance your passion and the market availability .

Stage 2. Choosing a Domain Name

easy domain names with most common extension
domain name

A domain name is simply the name of your website or blog, what people type in their browser to enter into your particular blog or Web pages. for example is my domain name.

It’s like an address through which people pass to get to you. So you want to make sure to be clear with it so that people who seek you find you.

Some SEO evangelists preach that when choosing a domain name, it’s a good SEO strategy to include the theme of your blog into your domain name

For example. if you are blogging about how to get admission into schools. you may want to choose a domain name like or etc. I am sure you grab.

While this is cool to some extent. Do not be stucked with this method . Allow your muse to get even more creative bearing in mind that content is still king.

Here are some great tips to follow when choosing your domain name:

  • Let it be brandadble .You want to have a domain name that is unique and more of a brand than just a name. for example Amazon, twitter, Microsoft etc are great examples of brandable domain names.
  • Let it not be too long. You don’t want to use something like this or anything as long as that.

Finding it difficult to carve a cool domain name?

Nameboy is an effective online tool that can help you generate tones of domain names.

Stage 3.  Hosting your Blog

storing your blog in the space
web hosting

This is simply making your blog available for users in the internet to see.So a web host stores all your blog files and make it available for users all over the world to access. Let’s make it even clearer. A web host is like your physical store or shop that houses your goods or products, where people can come to get them.

There are many web hosting companies littered all over the internet with all of them  priding themselves to be the best. So it becomes necessary that you make a good and thorough research by reading up reviews online, so as to make a wise decision when choosing your web host.

Let me tell you that though there are great and popular web hosts out there, there is no best web host as many reviewers will make you believe. It all boils down to you, what you want and what your budget is saying.

If you are a beginner blogger and on a very tight budget, you could go for a cheaper but highly reliable hosts out there.I strongly recommend Namecheap.  With less than $25 or # 9000, you will have your domain name registered, your blog hosted and running smoothly.

Namecheap has a lot of positive reviews out there and a lot of happy customers too ( I am one of them). You may want to try it.Their support is second to none.

Aside that,  other great hosting networks to consider include

  •  Bluehost
  • Siteground
  • Hostgator etc

Bear in mind that more cost some sometimes isn’t more value.

You might like read wpbeginner’s review of 10 best hosting networks

At the end of the day, the decision is all yours to make but this is what you should look out for when chosing your web host

A good web host should have the following

  • A good Uptime : That is the period of time your blog is up and running. 99.99% uptime is always the best. You don’t want your site always going down.
  • A great loading speed: You want to ensure that your blog has a maximum loading speed. Nothing annoys users more as a slow loading website or blog.
  • A great customer care support: Until you run into a technical difficulty, you may not understand why a good support is highly important. Ensure your choice web host has a maximum customer support
  • A strong security: You don’t want hackers to ruin all your hard work  and keep you depressed. Every business needs good security

Stage 4. Installing WordPress and designing your blog

wordpress installation

I ultimately assume that WordPress is your choiced blogging platform owing to its popularity and the great possibilities it can offer. You can however launch your blog in any other platform such as Blogger, Wix etc. Though I strongly recommend WordPress if you’re starting a blog in 2019.

The advantages of WordPress are too numerous to be ignored. It is the God of web designing today especially for non techy users.

Below are reasons why I highly recommend WordPress over others.

  • It is super easy to use : You don’t have to write any single line of code to install WordPress. Gone are the days when you have to be a coder or pay a huge amount of money to a developer to design a blog for you.

  • It’s very secured: Security is the last thing you want to take lightly about your blog. WordPress offers strong security to your site and still provide you with additional plugins to improve on the security of your blog

  • It’s rich in features: With its thousands of beautiful themes(free and paid) and amazing plugins(free and paid) , you can never go wrong with your blog’s design and functionality

  • It’s completely free: I know you like this one,  you don’t have to pay any dime to anybody to use it. It’s an open source software . You just have install it, install a theme and play around with the design. Then you install some plugins, activate and set up them up and you are good to go.

Do ensure though to install using and not

Check out the difference between and

Bonus Tip: Always have a blog or two whose design you love and let it guide you in designing your own blog. it doesn’t mean you should create exactly the same thing but let it guide you ultimately to making your work easier and faster.

You have successfully set up your blog

Go ahead ,write your first post and publish it . Keep writing and publishing cause the blogging business have started. you are now full blown blogger.

“It’s all good, thanks so far, how then do I make the money?”

making money from blogginh

The moment we are all waiting for is here, it is time for me to walk you through all the proven ways you can easily make money with your blog.

Truth is, if there is no money to be made in blogging,   believe me, the only bloggers you would see around would  be fun bloggers and they will be very few in numbers. The incredible increase and popularity of blogging in the last few year speaks volume of the amount of money-making potential in this  business

So it is in fact true what you have heard that thousands of people are making millions just blogging. Sadly, a lot of bloggers are not making this money because they are committing too much of blogging blunders or not following the right strategies

However, if you follow the proven strategies I am about to reveal to you now .you can be among those bloggers smiling to the bank every now and then. Let’s ride on

Affiliate Marketing

leading readers to buy a product and you get paid in exchange

A special form of marketing where a promoter promotes products and services through an affiliate network and gets paid in return. Basically, one gets paid for promoting or leading a buyer to buy a particular product or service.

This is one monetization strategy that many top earning bloggers are using to rake millions. It is a gold mine when tapped well. You make consistent income simply promoting affiliate offers to your loyal readers who have come to trust you and what your blog stands for.

This is the  why you must focus on building credibility and with your blog. Nobody will trust what you are offering or promoting if they don’t trust you in the first place.  This translates that you have to start making sense and offering value from the outset of your blogging.

Nonetheless, I have to tell you that the success of your affiliate marketing depends largely on your traffic. The higher your traffic, the higher your income. Much more important than traffic is your niche. some niches perform better than others in promoting affiliate offers.

For example. Mr A. blogs about Celebrity News and Gists and Mr B. blogs about Men’s health.

Even if Mr A. gets a higher traffic than Mr B.  Mr B. will have a higher chance of making more money promoting affiliate offers than Mr A. assuming they both have built credibility in the eyes of their readers.

“Why is this, you. may ask?. Didn’t you say that the higher the traffic the higher the money?”

Well, when it comes to affiliate marketing, while high traffic is very important so as to skyrocket your earning. There is a catch to it. The highest determining factor in my personal experience is your niche. Some niche as I have pointed out earlier outperform others.

Back to our example. At this point, you should have an idea why Mr B will make more money promoting affiliate offers.

Here is the reason if you haven’t figured it out

Mr B. is in a niche where there are plenty of niche-related products and services that his readers may be interested to buy. On the other hand, Mr A. may have little or no niche-related products or services to promote.

Does it make some sense now?

Knowing that affiliate marketing is all about promoting a products and ultimately leading your readers to buy will go a long way to tell if you are in the right niche for it or not.

  • It is usually and mostly free, all you do is just to sign up and get accepted. Then you begin to promote offers related to your niche

  • It doesn’t need much work, the affiliate network you are promoting do all the work of handling the sales and even sending your commission. You just give your readers convincing reasons why they should buy the offer you are promoting and finally providing your affiliate link.

  • You are not limited to the number of affiliate offers you can promote. You can sign up to as many affiliate programs related to your niche as you can to help increase your earning. But let me quickly add that you strike a balance while you do that. You don’t want to over litter your blog with affiliate links that you begin to appear desperate in the eyes of your readers.

  • You don’t have to create your own products. Others create the product, you promote it and get paid a commission when people make a purchase. No stress at all.

  • It is completely passive, you keep  earning as long as people keep buying

So how do I get affiliate networks to promote offers for?

There are plenty of them. Make research online for them with respect to your niche

Here are few popular ones:

  • Markethealth

  • Konga

  • Jumia

  • Amazon

Promoting affiliate offers is a way to go

Using Ad Networks

Targetted Ads

It’s basically an advertisement service that place ads in form of targeted text, videos or image that makes you money when your visitors clicks on it or views it. Google Adsense is the most popular of all. This monetizing strategy  is one of the commonest ways of making money with your blog.

Lots of controversies however, trail this particular method. Why some think it’s a complete waste of time, some sing testimonies about it daily.

My advice, don’t take their(those who hold a negative view ) words for it .Try it out if you haven’t or are hesitant to. Even if you had failed before, reassess your approach and see if you are doing it correctly or not.

How it works

Sign up for with the chosen network and get approved. They systematically send you targeted ads relevant to your blog’s content. As your reader clicks on the ad, you get paid. it’s that simple.

Unlike affiliate marketing, your readers don’t have to necessarily buy a product before you get paid. It’s what in the internet marketing lingual referred to as (PPC/PPV) per per click or view. This means, you would need a reasonable traffic to make a reasonable amount of money with this method.

Ad network is a good way of making money from your blog. It’s a set and forget strategy and one fast way beginner bloggers can make money when you do it right and obey the rules of the network.

Here are few alternative ad networks other than Google Adsense

  • Viglink

  • Amazon Display Ads

Truth is, some bloggers have zeroed their mind about ever using Ad networks.  some have also vowed never to leave it. If you are a beginner blogger, It will be very unwise for you not to test it and conclude it’s not a way to go. This is for you who have probably read or heard one or two negative things about it from someone who have failed to do it right or adopt a better strategy. You could be leaving a huge money on the table when you ignore Ad networks.

Sponsored posts

get paid poting sponsored post in your blog

A sponsored blog post is simply a post or review  written about a brand or product which is usually related to your blog in exchange for payment.

Some times, you create such posts based on your experience using the product or the service. Other times the brand sends the review, all you do is post on your blog and you get paid for it.

This method is easy and more direct way of making money from your blog compared to ad networks. Some bloggers are making plenty money simply sponsoring few posts on their blog. Unlike ad networks, there are no rules. You are always in control, you have a say in how much you will be paid.

You can directly contact the sponsor and strike the deal. Alternatively, there are online networks where you can sign up to get connected to brands and sponsors. These networks serve the purpose of connecting you with sponsors. Below are few of them

  • Paperpost

  • Sponsored reviews

  • Cooperatize

  • Tapinfluence

  • Blogs Meet Brands

  • Valuedvoice

  • Speedingup

  • Get Reviewed

Having a reputable blog and a large readership is a sine qua non of making it big with sponsored posts . Reputable blogs attract reputable brands that will ultimately pay well.

Selling digital products and services

selling digital products and online courses

Another proven way in which you can make money from your blog is by selling digital products such as e-books, videos, software ,themes, plugins etc or rendering  services like writing, web designing, coaching , online classes etc. It’s more like information marketing. This method is especially suitable for bloggers who have one skill or the other.

To make this option work, you need to show yourself approved by being extremely good at what you are offering. Online communities are the most difficult sets of people to convince to pay up for a product or service, but if you have consistently dished our high quality and valuable contents prior to offering something to be paid for. You have little work to do convincing them. Your previous work would have taken care of that.

“Isn’t it why quality content will continue to be king?”. It is if you asked me.

Aside producing great contents, come with a better and different approach. Always have some touches of uniqueness to your contents. This is because a whole lot of people are offering courses and writing e-books on same topic. You have to be exceptional to stand out. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. 20 badly written e-books or online courses can not save you. In fact, it has a way of ruining your credibility, but one exceptionally written e-book or course can change your blogging fortune for good.

Jon morrow of Smartblogger and other top bloggers have made and are still making fortunes offering online services.

Blog Flipping

selling blogs at higher priceThis is a process of buying in low price and selling at a higher price of blogs  or building a blog from scratch and selling it off after giving it some value.

Never heard of it?, well it is real and one incredible way some bloggers have been secretly making money and smiling to the bank. It is still a largely untapped strategy capable of making so much money which only few people know about especially in Nigeria.

It is basically like you building a shop where you display your wares to sell, at a point, you want to sell out both the shop and all the goods in it. This is because someone is requesting to pay much more than you had invested on it. Such thing is applicable in digital space. Selling your blog or site completely, not just the products you offer but every thing.

Blog flipping could be liken to real estate, where you buy or build houses to sell at a much higher price.

“while would I want to sell my blog?”

Well, you don’t necessarily have to sell your your personal blog if you don’t want to. You can still tap from from this goldmine. How? By buying existing blogs at low prices, developing it to a valuable and appreciable standard and selling it off while still keeping your personal blog.

How does this work?

You simply Sign up on and get your blog registered. Flippa’s model of operation is on bidding method. The highest bidder gets to own the blog. It’s a sweet thing right?

You are only required to set the bid price of your blog usually 10 or 15 times greater than the  monthly income you presently generate from the blog.

For example, if the blog is generating $300 per month, you can set the basic selling bid price of the blog to at least $3000.

Start the auction and watch out for people  bidding  to buy your blog. As soon as you get the bid that satisfies you. You conclude with the bidder and relax.

Flippa will handle all the payment issues and technicalities and finally send your money through your preferred means. That’s all.

This technique has continued to pump money for bloggers who know about it and will continue to pump. Join the train now

Yes, you have been digitally armed to invade the blogging industry, make a name for yourself ,build a brand and ultimately make extraordinary income.

You have seen it all, money is in this blogging business. It is not a mirage nor a fairy tale. You can actually make this money if you have the right information of the working strategies .

While all the above methods may not work for you at the same time. Be sure to try all of all them as you progress and stick to the ones bringing you maximum results
